Whether your deck is composite or wood, each has its charm—and its own set of needs. Composite decks are known for their durability and lower deck maintenance, while wooden decks require a bit more TLC. The good news is a little seasonal deck maintenance can go a long way. Not only can you protect your deck from the elements, but you can enhance its appearance and extend its lifespan.

Spring Maintenance

Fall leaves, dirt, branches, and possibly mildew may accumulate on your deck over the winter. Spring’s mild temperatures are opportune for cleaning up and setting the stage for warmer weather enjoyment.

We recommend thoroughly cleaning your deck once yearly. While some homeowners prefer to do this in the spring, the summer or fall are also perfectly acceptable times to perform this maintenance task.

If you have a composite deck, wash it using a mild soap and water solution to remove accumulated dirt and debris. Cleaning your deck prevents any buildup that could cause damage over time. Use a power washer with a fan-tipped nozzle on the lowest setting for quicker cleaning. Treat mold or mildew spots with a composite deck cleaner to keep it looking fresh and prevent potential health hazards.

If you have a wood deck, power washing helps more quickly remove dirt, mold, and mildew that may have accumulated during the winter. Use the appropriate pressure setting and nozzle to avoid damaging the wood, as with composite decking.

Next, carefully inspect your deck. Look for any signs of damage, such as cracks or loose boards, and address them promptly to maintain the structural integrity of your deck. Pay special attention to fasteners and joints, as these areas are prone to wear and tear. You’ll also want to check for signs of rot or insect damage on wood decks.

Composite decks don’t require protective coatings, but we recommend applying a UV-protective stain or sealant on your wooden deck to protect it every two years or so. Sealing it will enhance the deck’s appearance and provide a protective barrier against the elements. You can apply stain or sealant in any season when the weather isn’t excessively hot, cold, or humid. The best times to apply protective coatings are when the weather is moderately warm and dry, such as in late spring and early fall.

Summer Maintenance

Aspen Outdoor Design Winter MaintenanceSummer brings longer days and more outdoor time, so maintaining your deck focuses on preventative care to protect it during heavy use. Both composite and wooden decks require specific care to withstand the intense summer sun and increased foot traffic.

Summer maintenance for composite decking focuses on regularly sweeping to remove dirt and debris that can scratch or wear down the decking. Note that area rugs with rubber or vinyl backings can leave a residue that may not be easily removable. Choose rugs designed for outdoor use to allow for better air circulation, and periodically move them to avoid shadow lines.

Regular sweeping and moisture control are also key aspects of summer wood deck maintenance. Ensure your deck has adequate drainage to prevent water pooling, which can lead to wood rot and other damage. Periodically shifting rugs helps the wood beneath dry out evenly and prevents moisture from becoming trapped.

Fall Maintenance

Fall maintenance ensures that composite and wooden decks remain in good condition and are ready to withstand winter weather. The maintenance procedure for each type of decking material in the fall is essentially the same.

The standard is to remove debris to prevent staining and mold growth, which can occur if organic material decomposes on the surface. After cleaning, inspect your deck for any damage that may have happened over the summer, checking the same areas as you would in the spring. Finally, prepare your deck for winter by ensuring it is clean and dry.

Winter Maintenance

Winter can be particularly harsh on decks, so taking the proper steps to protect them is essential. Both composite and wooden decks require specific care to withstand the cold, snow, and ice.

Use a plastic shovel to avoid scratching the surface of your composite deck during snow and ice removal. Full metal and metal-edged shovels can cause significant damage, so it’s best to avoid them. A stiff-bristled push broom works well and minimizes lifting. A leaf blower can efficiently clear light snow. Do not attempt to break up or scrape ice from the deck surface; use composite-compatible ice-melt products when needed. Instead of using salt, which can also damage the deck, any snow-melting product with calcium chloride is safe.

As with composite decking, use a plastic shovel over a metal one for snow and ice removal to prevent damage to a wood deck. Avoid using salt, as it can cause damage to the wood and accelerate wear. Calcium chloride is safe on wood as well. Consider covering your wooden deck to protect it from harsh winter weather, reducing the risk of moisture damage and extending the life of the wood.
