Before and After
The objective was to extend the family’s useful outdoor living space beyond just the areas surrounding the existing pool.
The Process
The client’s wish list included a gas-burning firepit to gather around following a dip in the pool or on a cool evening, a roofed structure for a shady area to sit and converse with guests, and a large outdoor kitchen to cook for the kids’ soccer team and other neighborhood or family gatherings.
The greatest design challenge was a limited area to work within and a condensed timeline for completion. Being in a typical subdivision located in Hamilton County, Indiana, there were large easements on the property limiting the available space. In addition, the client wanted to begin using the space in the spring following the year the project was designed.
The Solution
Aspen’s team of landscape architects created a modern space featuring a sleek, rectangular gas firepit. The modern shape saves space without compromising functionality.
The “lean to” roof structure offers shade and adds a very welcoming feel to the space in addition to privacy from neighboring homes. The outdoor kitchen with expansive bar can easily accommodate the whole soccer team or can comfortably seat up to eight adults. To help with scheduling, the project was built during the winter months using tarps, heaters, and plenty of warming blankets. The project’s final completion occurred in the spring, coinciding with the pool opening for the season!
The family’s original outdoor living space was only about 4 to 10 feet of concrete around the existing pool. The new design features additional “rooms” adjacent to the water but connected by a strong axis down the center of the pool.
