Before and After
The goal of this project was created to offer the client, a large family, plenty of room for entertaining but with a smaller, intimate feel.
The Design Process
Several design challenges presented themselves. First, the backyard had a severe slope just a few feet outside the walkout basement door. Second, the client wanted privacy, but they live in a typical suburban subdivision with houses close together.
The Solution
Aspen’s design team created a space large enough to comfortably accommodate the large family and many guests to a cookout or birthday party. However, at the same time, just the family could sit around the gas firepit or dining table and feel like they were in an intimate space. Retaining walls were used sparingly and also served as steps or seat walls to help with cost. Natural stone boulder retaining walls helped soften the look and feel of the backyard. Steps from the upper paver patio to the lower paver firepit area helped break the large space up into smaller, more intimate spaces and a cedar louvered screen blocked out the neighbors but still allowed for ample airflow through the space.
