Before and After
This project was completed in two phases. The first phase was installed in summer of 2017, a roofed structure, outdoor kitchen and fireplace added functionality as an outdoor living space. In the spring of 2019, the second phase capitalized on the integration of a pool with along with a lower elevation for sunset views and waterfall sounds from the pool.
Working with challenges
This project had several challenges including achieving harmony with the design elements and the site, capitalizing on the views from the house, and achieving a cohesive design even though it was executed as two separate projects. Capitalizing on views was challenging because the client’s wish list included a roofed structure, outdoor kitchen and fireplace… all massive design elements. However, views were preserved by placing the structure away from the house and off to the side… thus creating a destination. By doing so, however, meant they would be exposed to the street.
The Design Solution
To ensure privacy screening was added along the back side of the outdoor kitchen and other plant material was used to make the space feel more protected. To achieve harmony between the site and design elements, natural boulders were used for retaining so living spaces could blend with the topography. Additionally, the pool (added later) was designed to capitalize on the pond by integrating an infinity edge and lower elevation so it was nestled into the slope of the backyard. When adding the pool, views were enhanced by creating outdoor living on an upper terrace, using an infinity edge on the pool, and adding a lower seating area with soothing waterfalls in the pool.
