The Vision: Initial Consultation and Design Goals

blueprint noblesville landscape designEvery great outdoor transformation begins with understanding the homeowner’s vision for their space. During an initial consultation with Aspen, our designers meet with homeowners to discuss what they hope to achieve with their space.

For the following Noblesville landscape design project, the homeowner sought a comprehensive backyard renovation to transform their property’s outdoor space. Working alongside one of our landscape architects, they explored ideas for creating multiple functional zones. Three distinct zones included a pool area, an outdoor kitchen, a covered patio, and a spot for a fire pit.

The goal was clear: enhance the home by combining beauty and practicality, creating a cohesive space that reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle. Before any physical work could commence, one of Aspen’s talented architects brought the design to life. Creating a final design that leapt off the page from drawings and blueprints to a 3D rendering to present to the homeowners.

Phase One

Demolition: Resetting the Existing Space

With the vision in place and final design approved, Aspen crews could begin demolition on existing structures and plant materials. This site preparation included clearing existing landscaping and removing soil to create space for new hardscape elements.

Building the Foundation: Retaining Walls and Grading

This backyard required extensive grading to create a level foundation for each outdoor living zone. Due to the property’s natural elevation changes, well-engineered retaining walls were critical. The retaining walls improve function and structural support in addition to aesthetic enhancements. Mapping the layout for proper drainage ensures water flows away from any outdoor living zones or features.

Constructing a long-lasting outdoor space begins from the ground up. It’s essential to prioritize proper grading and structural integrity before incorporating larger, more exciting visual features. For this project, sturdy and heavy-load bearing retaining walls were necessary to manage the natural slope of the property. Partnered with drainage panes and perforated tiles for optimal drainage, these walls provide essential support, define the layout, and elevate the overall design.

Initial Feature Installation

As the structural elements took shape, the next steps included incorporating the core features of the design, the inground pool. Aspen’s landscape architect designed the pool and the surrounding patio space. The installation is then handed over to one of our trusted partners and another local Noblesville landscape design expert, Pools by Cory

This stage of the project also saw Aspen’s hardscape division install a gas-burning fire pit feature. This is also when steps spanning elevation changes to connect functional zones were installed, including the upcoming covered patio.

Phase 2

Creating Outdoor Living Spaces

One of the standout features of this Noblesville landscape design project was the custom cedar roofed structure. The perfect design to provide a comfortable, shaded space and outdoor extension of the home’s living area.

With a pitched roof and detailed cedar-wrapped beams and rafters, the shade structure delivers architectural beauty and long-term durability. The structure connects directly to the home, with shingles to match the existing roofline for a cohesive, polished look. The structure includes a rough-in for a ceiling fan, recessed can lighting, and electrical outlets for an outdoor television or other comforts.

Also included in the installation was a full outdoor kitchen using Unilock limestone, a custom granite countertop, and outdoor element-resistant appliances. The sleek countertop partners with the stainless steel drawers and hardware to add a polished, modern touch with timeless appeal that complements the surrounding hardscape.

Phase 3

Finishing Touches

The final phase is always where new outdoor living spaces truly come to life. Thoughtfully placed plantings, including trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennials, soften the edges of the hardscape with a lush, layered feel. The planting beds were prepared with care, mulch was spread for moisture retention and a polished look, and flagstone steppers were placed to guide movement through the yard.

To extend the usability of the space, the homeowners opted to have Aspen install outdoor lighting by Unique Lighting Systems, choosing fixtures that complement the design and spotlight the fire pit, outdoor kitchen, and flower bed features.

The Reveal: Before and After Transformation

The final transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Side-by-side before and after photos capture just how far the space has come, from an outdated and limited yard to a fully custom outdoor retreat.

Every detail, down to the lighting, layout, and materials, was designed with the homeowners’ lifestyle in mind. The final result meets their needs for functionality and comfort while bringing their vision to life in a way that feels personal and perfectly suited for the space.
